Filep Karma, a West Papuan independence activist, died on November 1, 2022, aged 63.
Born in Jayapura in 1959, he became one of the best-known figures in the movement for West Papua’s self-determination. On December 1, 2004, he helped raise the Morning Star flag at a ceremony in Jayapura, an act that led to a treason charge and a 15-year prison sentence.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch campaigned on his behalf, and Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience. Karma was released from prison on November 19, 2015, and died in Jayapura.
