Gene Hooks, American university athletics director and longtime Wake Forest University athletic director, died on April 6, 2026.

He was 98. Hooks served as Wake Forest’s athletic director from 1964 to 1992 after playing baseball for the Demon Deacons from 1947 to 1950.

A third baseman, he earned first-team All-America honors in 1947 and 1949 and second-team All-American honors in 1950. In 1949, he helped lead Wake Forest to the College World Series championship game. After graduating in 1950, he played professionally in the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs organizations before retiring after the 1954 season.
