A Democrat, she represented the 31st Legislative District from 2007 through 2024 and was sworn into office on November 8, 2007. Her career included county employment and a leadership role in Hudson County: after working in various county jobs in Essex County, she became executive of the Hudson County Bar Association in 1988.
Born Sandra Bolden in Newark on September 4, 1950, she was raised in the city, graduated from West Side High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Bloomfield College. She was also an actress and a member of the Negro Ensemble Company. Her path through performance, county work, association administration and elected office brought together distinct parts of her public and professional life. Cunningham was the widow of Glenn Cunningham, the former Jersey City mayor, who died in 2004. In the Senate, she represented the same legislative district throughout her service, nearly 17 years in office. She was also known as Sandra Cunningham.
