Poomani, the Indian novelist and short story writer best known for Agnaadi, died on July 12, 2026.
Born in 1947 as Manickavasagamm in Andipatti, near Kovilpatti in Tamil Nadu, he wrote about ordinary lives in the karisal bhoomi, the rain-fed black-soil belt of southern Tamil Nadu. He was widely recognized for Agnaadi, which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in Tamil in 2014, and for Vekkai, adapted into the 2019 film Asuran, which drew wider attention to his work.
