Born in Barcelona on March 17, 1935, he wrote in Spanish and was known especially for the tetralogy Antagony, published between 1973 and 1981. Goytisolo studied law at the University of Barcelona before turning to literature and later became a member of the Real Academia Española.

Over the course of his career, he received the Premio Biblioteca Breve, the Castilian Narrative Critic Award, the National Novel Prize, the Spanish Literature National Prize and the Anagrama Essay Prize.
