Jacob Cress dead at age 81, American furniture maker

Jacob Cress, an American furniture maker known for his interpretations of classical 18th-century furniture, died on May 19, 2026.

He was 81. Born in 1944 in Norton, Virginia, he worked for years in Virginia and later made his home and shop in Fincastle.

Better known as Jake Cress, he described himself as a cabinet maker rather than an artist and also built miniature furniture, carved boxes and decorative pieces, restored furniture, and created his own furniture after leaving a cabinet-making business he had opened with his brother Joe in Abingdon in 1974.
