Horst Schmid, a German-born Canadian politician and international trade businessman, died on April 4, 2026.
He was 92. Born in Munich, Germany, on April 29, 1933, Schmid emigrated to Canada and worked as a miner in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, in 1952 before moving to Edmonton in 1956.
He later served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1971 to 1986 with the governing Progressive Conservative party and held several ministerial portfolios in Alberta’s Executive Council.
