Gil Rowntree, the Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, died on May 24, 2026.
He was 92. Rowntree was one of the most successful trainers in Canadian Thoroughbred racing history.
He began his racing career as a jockey in Toronto, riding from 1949 through 1951, before moving into training. He later obtained his trainer’s licence in 1959 and worked under Hall of Fame trainer Lou Cavalaris Jr. Rowntree went on to win eight Canadian Classic Races and was the first winner of the Sovereign Awards program’s Canada’s Outstanding Trainer award in 1975.
