Royal, an American physician, company director and civic leader, died on February 2, 2026. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on September 15, 1939, he graduated from Virginia Union University in 1961 and earned an MD from Meharry Medical College in 1968.

Royal practiced medicine in Richmond, Virginia, from 1969. He also served as chief of staff at Richmond Community Hospital and as an assistant clinical professor of family practice at the Medical College of Virginia. Royal was chairman and president of the National Medical Association, an African-American medical organization.
