Franco De Piccoli dead at age 88, Italian boxer, Olympic champion

Franco De Piccoli, the Italian boxer and 1960 Olympic champion, died on May 22, 2026, aged 88.

Born in Campalto, Italy, on November 29, 1937, he began boxing in 1955 and won national heavyweight titles in 1959 and 1960. At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, he won the gold medal in the heavyweight division after reaching the final and stopping Daan Bekker in 90 seconds.

He turned professional after the Olympics and retired in 1965. He later worked as a driving instructor.
