Born in Albolote, in the province of Granada, on January 24, 1938, he was a priest in the Opus Dei Prelature and the author of several books. He was best known for Hablar con Dios (In Conversation with God), a seven-volume work of more than 450 meditations that has sold over two million copies in several languages.

Fernández Carvajal studied history at the University of Navarra and earned a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum, in Rome.
