David J. Halberstam dead at age 74, American sports broadcaster and producer

David J.

Halberstam, an American sports broadcaster and producer, died on June 2, 2026, at age 74. Born October 7, 1951, he served as executive vice president and general manager of Westwood One Sports and previously worked as the play-by-play announcer for the Miami Heat and St.

John’s basketball. Halberstam also wrote Sports on New York Radio: A Play-by-Play History in 1999 and The Fundamentals of Sports Media and Sponsorship Sales: Developing New Accounts in 2016. In 2011, he joined Nova Southeastern University as the men’s basketball play-by-play announcer, a role he held until 2019, and in 2018 he launched Sports Broadcast Journal, a website focused on sports broadcasters and the sports media business.
