Born on 26 September 1943, he attended Radley College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1967, appointed a Recorder in 1992, made a bencher in 1995, and became Queen’s Counsel in 1998.

On 24 January 2001, he was appointed a High Court judge and received the customary knighthood, sitting in the Queen’s Bench Division before retiring at the age of 70.
