Clem Sunter, a South African futurist, scenario planner, business executive and author, died on February 18, 2026, aged 81.

Born Christopher Louis Clem Sunter on 8 August 1944 in Suffolk, England, he is best known for developing the High Road/Low Road scenarios in the 1980s, which outlined possible political and economic futures for South Africa during the late apartheid era. The scenarios contributed to public discussion ahead of the country’s democratic transition.

Sunter worked for much of his career with Anglo American in South Africa and later led its scenario planning team in the mid-1980s.
