Bruno Contrada Italian police officer dead at age 94

Bruno Contrada, the Italian police officer and intelligence official who served as police chief of Palermo and deputy director of the civil intelligence service SISDE, died on March 13, 2026.

Born in Naples on 2 September 1931, he joined the Italian police in 1958. He was appointed head of the judiciary police in Palermo in 1973 and transferred to SISDE in 1982, where he was responsible for the agency’s operations in Sicily and Sardinia.

In 1986, he was promoted to the Operational Division of the SISDE headquarters in Rome. He was later arrested based on revelations from former Sicilian Mafiosi turned pentiti, Gaspare Mutolo and Giuseppe Marchese.

Bruno Contrada (2 September 1931 – 12 March 2026) was an Italian police and intelligence officer who was the police chief of Palermo and deputy director of the civil intelligence service SISDE. He was arrested based on revelations of former Sicilian Mafiosi turned pentiti (en: collaborators of justice); Gaspare Mutolo and Giuseppe Marchese.
