Barnes was a halfback in the National Football League, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Barnes played college football and baseball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Born in Landis, North Carolina, he was a three-sport star in high school and led his 1953 football team to an undefeated season before enrolling at Wake Forest University in 1953.

Billy Ray Barnes (May 14, 1935 – December 31, 2025) was an American professional football player who was a halfback in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football and baseball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection in the NFL. After his playing career, he became a coach.
